Planning a trip? Check out the Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site website.

The first railroad over the Allegheny Mountains belonged to the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal system. In operation from 1834 to 1854, it moved goods and people and connected Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Engine House No. 6 Exhibit Shelter, the Lemon House tavern, and Skew Arch Bridge are among the Portage’s preserved elements.
